Savoia-Marchetti SM.81 Pipistrello

This plane was part of the 214th Squadriligia, 24th Gruppo, 21st Stormo Bombardameto Pesante Pipistrelli - based at Tudelo, Spain in 1938.

The SM.81 was Italy's main bomber from 1934 to 1939, and though largely replaced by the SM.79 by WWII, it continued in bombing, night bombing and transport roles in through 1943, serving over the East Africa, the Med, and in the Desert theaters. Exactly 100 were sent to fight in the Spanish Civil War for the Spanish Nationalist side.

I created the SM.81 model for Emil's Malta and Desert War War campaigns plus the upcoming Spanish Civil War campaign. I used Cord's Ju-52 to start development from.

Moggy was also a contributor to this model, doing the paste on points work to allow adding the dorsal and ventral turrets.

I also did the skin camouflage for this plane. The model is non mirrored.

This plane is for use in the He111 slot, and since there is currently not a specific spot for it in ECAP, use the SM79 flight model for the He111 in the present ECAP. Charles has suggested he may program the Ju88C slot for the SM81. If he does that, I will convert the model to the Ju88 C slot. You could also use SnapShot to snap it into that slot, if you like..

The PCX is provided in case you would like to try creating a new skin for the model - with my blessings.

Cheers,

Captain Kurt
